NOT THE SELF-EMPLOYMENT
PATH

Sean had been in the banking business on-and-off for over 20 years. It was the perfect job while bringing up the kids because he could spend every evening and all weekend with them and his wife. Unfortunately, the bank where he was last employed was acquired by a larger bank, and he was let go. He quickly discovered the difficulties of being in the job market when over 50 years old. He had been unemployed for 6 months and there were no prospects in sight.

Sean had a vague sense that he could do something on his own, but he wasn't sure what that would be. A friend referenced Your New Career so he registered and summarized his situation in the "Comments" section. He was immediately contacted by YNC personnel, and he decided to enter the Silver program. Sean was given the password to the Questionnaire on the YNC site, and he filled in his answers. Time to complete - 35 minutes.

YNC personnel contacted Sean by email and summarized what his responses meant. The primary conclusion by YNC was great concern about proceeding down the self-employment path because of the low rating in 3 key areas: determination, work pattern and decision-making. It turns out Sean had done an excellent job in the banking industry, but always in a staff position. He was not used to making major decisions and did not want to make them if possible to avoid. He was also locked into the 9 to 5 routine, and really didn't want to stray too far from that pattern. It also turned out that he was unsure about starting a company and didn't have the determination needed to make it a success.

YNC recommended against continuing down the self-employment path and Sean agreed. Under the terms of the Silver Plan, YNC refunded 50% of his fees.

YNC also had knowledge that one of their former clients, who now had a solid financial services company, were looking for someone with Sean's background and experience. The introduction was made, Sean was offered the job, and he accepted.
